Niche Marketing | Are there enough people for my niche market?

Mike Crowley posted a question on my blog about how would I know if there are enough people out there to justify the creation of a digital product.

Good question Mike, and it’s one I can answer for you.

Whenever I am going to do some internet marketing or creating a digital product of my own to market, its very important for me to know how many people out there are actively searching for my chosen niche.

An important rule of thumb is More Traffic means More Visitors, means More Sales.

If we were to look at the number of searches generated on Google for a UK or USA market, we would know there would be many times more people searching for that phrase than there would be here in Ireland.

This is good news for us:

1. Being from a small populated Island we know that we won’t have as many searches generating here, but people will still be searching.

2. Not having many searches means not many affiliates will be basing their market here, meaning it’s far easier for us to seek out and stomp our competition.

Of course this doesn’t mean we are to negate the rest of the World for internet marketing – I’m mearly using Ireland as a lot of you on here will probably have a physcial, tangible product to sell and it’s probably focussed to an Irish market.

Note here though that I would take the same steps when affiliate marketing in other countries.

I’m going to take the niche of Indian Ceramics that I had found in this post and I am going to run it throug Google’s keyword Tool, which can be found in the Tools area of Google Adwords. I strongly suggest you sign up for an account, there’s no cost and you get to use many of the features Google has to offer, such as the Website Optimiser, which we’ll cover a little later.

For the time being, you can use the Google External Keyword Tool which will give you just as many results as the other version, but you don’t need to sign in.

So let’s run Indian Ceramics through the tool, and remember to change the location to Ireland, as we want to know how many people are searching in Ireland.

Indian Ceramics returned no results for February, yet has an average seach volume of 720. I would be concerned as to why there’s no results for February, and would probably disgard this as a keyword for use.

Press the words “Approx Search Volume: February” so you have it sorted in descending order.

Taking a look down I see the keyword Indian Songs with 6,600 searches in February.

This looks like a nice niche, so I will run an allintitle: search in Google.ie to see what my competition is like.

The results look promising, with 136 results coming back.

Taking 6,600 and dividing that up over the 28 days of February gives us roughly 235 searches a day. It would be good to appear in the top ten with an Indian Songs related product in that search.

Taking the typcial 1% conversion rate, 235 people per day, visiting your site (if you were getting all the traffic) would equate to 2.35 sales per day. 2.35 X price of product. If it’s an affiliate or digital product, then that’s automatic autopilot money there for you.

Now, if there were enough products for me to market around Indian Songs, I would most probably go for it.

From these resuts I would say there’s easily enough of a market here in Ireland to promote to, and hopefully generate sales from.

Steps I would take:

1. First things first is there a product out there you can promote? If so, go to step 2.

2. Seek out your competition (IN IRELAND firstly), and see what they’re doing with regards SEO, price of products etc.

3. If you are finding little competition in Ireland, search the UK, and elsewhere. Get a good idea of the types of products they are selling and promoting, this can give you extra ideas.  See what they are charging for their products. are they affiliate products?

4. Register a good domain name like indiansongs.ie to help with your SERPs if you’re going to use the main phrase.

5. There’s plenty fo things to do to help you promote products, finding affiliates etc… so keep redaing the blog.

I just tried using the keyword tool for the term Vedic Maths and chose Ireland as my location, and discovered only 73 searches in February for it. My target market is the USA so I won’t get too hung up over it, however I do have customers in Ireland.  My website is located in the USA so it’s only natural people searching in Ireland for Irish webpages, problably won’t find my pages as they are hosted on a USA server.
